Hortense
Hortense is jarig. Er hangen ballonnen aan de poort. ’Hortense 6 ans’ staat er geschreven met zwarte viltstift. Op iedere ballon een woord.
Achter de poort is een tuin met bomen en een huis. Het dak en de kruinen zijn te zien. Daar is het feest van Hortense met taart, limonade en cadeaus. Wat zou ze hebben gekregen, vraag ik me af. En zijn er vriendjes op het feest? Was ze misschien bij haar grootouders om haar verjaardag te vieren? Stonden er zes kaarsjes op de taart? Hoe vroeg was ze wakker vandaag?
De volgende dag loop ik weer langs de poort aan de Rue du Plan d’ Eau, op weg naar de camping waar de tent staat. De ballonnen zijn geschrompeld, haar naam en leeftijd zijn nu klein. Er komt een meneer naar buiten. Is het haar vader? Ik vraag hem of de verjaardag van Hortense goed is verlopen. Hij lacht. Zowel stadse brutaliteit als plattelandse sociale controle liggen in mijn vraag besloten. Beide tonen zich op hun voordeligst.
Ik neem mij voor Hortense volgend jaar een verjaardagkaart te sturen. Vierentwintig augustus, dan zijn ook Renée en Saskia jarig.
